Sharukh Khan, the NO 1 hero and actor in the Bollywood today,
The debut of the Khan in to the Bollywood was a phenomena. He had no godfather,

no love story for him to begin with but quite amazingly a negative characterisation

which he had to check himself with. Might be - who knows he opted for that but

what an exhibition of a skill! It’s not just one skill he actually posessed - but an

ocean of skills. An all round capacity and versatility of skills.

Loved this post! I just finished reading the book and I thought it was great. I feared it would be too academic, but it turned out to be an easy read. I am a serious SRK fan who knows quite a bit about him (well, as much as he reveals), so I appreciated the context and the objectivity A. Chopra provided in her book. After having read it I have a much deeper understanding of the Hindi film industry and Indian culture in general. I like the direction Hindi films appear to be going these days and I hope the industry becomes more inclusive and tolerant of all Indians. SRK succeeded against all odds in such an industry and that is what impresses me the most about him.

Finally managed to get round to my emails after all the chaos of unpacking etc., I’m reading the chat now and it’s very interesting, this was a great idea and I’m glad it’s worked so well Now I’m off to write up my review of the book, and then I’ll sit back and wait/hope for SRK to comment here

To your point about SRK and criticism of his acting, Anupama does include comments about this and ShahRukh himself addresses the same. I’ve got to head out right now, or I’d get the book in hand and be a bit more specific….

In that sense, I would say that, while the author is enthusiastic about her subject, the book itself is not a blind hagiography of SRK. She does also cover his shortcomings and personal strengths and weaknesses, which I think makes him more interesting, and some would say, endearing because it humanizes him.

Thanks everyone, Maria especially, for this nice coverage of the SRK book… Makes one want to read it.
Perhaps a certain amount of criticism of “the king” could have been addressed? For example the difficulty he has to impersonate other characters apart from himself? Do we enjoy SRK movies (for those who do) because of his roleplaying, or because we like seeing him - again?

I too am looking so forward to reading Anupama’s upcoming book.
Her articles in The New York Times give me great pleasure as it’s allowed me to read about the subject of “Bollywood” on American soil. But I have such mixed feelings about opening up this phenomenal discovery(SRK) to others. Here’s hoping the book is a success anyway.
