Maria - I really liked your review of Saawariya, you capture a lot of things about it so well.

I'm not such an SLB fan. I was encouraged by the first maybe 15 minutes of the movie, though -- Rani's character is beautiful and alive-seeming (at this point - I think we get too much of the same "worldly laughing" by the time we saw good bye to her), and seemed to promise a Tale. In particular I liked hearing that this town existed in her mind -- I looked forward to kind of forgetting about that and then encountering it again.

But -- I am still waiting. Nothing ever again to deliver the magic implied in that statement, to relate the story we'd seen to the mind of its teller. Too bad, I think the movie needed the further penetration power that might have come in that way.

I liked the character of Salman a great deal - it's the center of gravity in the movie I'd say. And I enjoyed the sensations provided by the things about the movie you mention - its original visual world, costumes, and music - enough to see it a second time.

Maria,
It pains me me to hear SLB called a 'Maestro'---he's perhaps the most over-rated director in the history of Indian cinema. This movie was truly atrocious.
I agree with the critic who said "Sanjay Leela Bhansali needs to be thwacked with a subtlety stick, much like Sakina messily beats carpets hanging around her.Everything is overblown and hyper-real in the director's head, and there is no room for soft reality. The characters populating his movie, therefore, cannot sob without hysteria or laugh without sliding off a chair. A glare is held for ten minutes, a coy glance for five. And the dialogue is immeasurably grating, making the film's sub-130 minute length seem twice as long."
