Nice review, especially the whole "this isn't New York" detail. I recently saw the film, and now that you think about it, this was NOT New York afterall.

I thought the film was nicely filmed, the performances reasonably good, but the whole thing was constantly reminding me of other films. A bit of Khuda Key Liye, some of Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota, tied together with the doomed love story of Fanaa...Irrfan is worth watching in anything, though. I did wish that they wouldn't generalize as much as they did in the writing. I did get a bit thrown off by the Phillyness of it as well, especially when Philly City Hall is reflected in that glass building they were washing. Also, I attended Bryn Mawr, so I was pleasantly nostalgic by shots of Taylor, Thomas, Rhodes and Merion Halls as well as the lovely Pem Arches. Made me want to go back and vist. Amardeep, when was the filming going on?

I found "New York" better than I'd expected it to be. Like you, I was jarred at the thought of John as a college student ... but I was genuinely impressed in the torture scenes. I thought they were really well done.

I hated "Kabul Express," and I'm not too optimistic about this. It might be one of those rent the dvd, watch until the half-way point, and then go on to do something else.

My one point of curiosity is what they do with Philadelphia. I was actually there on one of the shooting days at Bryn Mawr college... Sadly, I didn't see anyone, and didn't have the time to wait until Katrina Kaif showed up.

About NYC movies not filmed here in NYC, there are several out there. Rumble In The Bronx (snowy rocky peaks, hovercraft public transport system, and street thugs with Canadian accents in the Bronx), Eyes Wide Shut (all the cars are right-hand-drive, street signs are typical British ones, etc) are just two examples that come to mind right away. Even big budget companies find it expensive to film here. So I don't blame smaller companies for cutting some costs like that.

And trust me, being Brazilian I know about such things. The majority of movies where the story takes place in Brazil are filmed in Mexico or Puerto Rico, and yet even the ones that are filmed in Brazil such as the latest Hulk movie refuses to hire Brazilians to play the Brazilian roles. Go figure.
