He’s gone to prison, not The Great Beyond !

Holy Toledo,  to listen to NDTV’s coverage yesterday (and today) of the six-year prison sentence for Sanjay Dutt, you’d think he (or some head of state) had just died!

Over and over, they played  every tiny celluloid detail of  the past two decades of his life, and the reactions and tributes from the film community, as if he was no more.

Meanwhile, the Hindustan Times reports today on everything from what Sanju had for lunch, to the luxury brand contents of his dopp kit and his favorite brand of ciggies.

  1. Hey, this was even mentioned in one of the Slovenian newspapers yesterday, and they *never* write about Bollywood (because over here, no one cares. Except, you know, me). What drama!

[tiny voice] And I feel kinda sorry for Sanju, even though if he broke the law of course he has to go to prison cos the rules apply to everyone and celebrities shouldn’t be excepted, but anyway. And what will become of Munnabhai chalo Amerika now? Eek. [/tiny voice]

  2. I would love to know if the Indian Media would’ve gone so overboard with their coverage had Dutt Not gotten any additional prison time.—-I think there’s something to be said about our secretly revelling in other peoples’ misery!
Having said that, I do think the coverage overall was far less venomous compared to the Paris Hilton DUI insanity here in the U.S

  3. Times of India had 6 pages of its main supplement on this news, yesterday. 6 full pages.

And you’re talking about NDTV? you should’ve seen the Hindi channels..like Star News. They made a movie out of it. Clips from Khalnayark, Zinda, etc. etc. Ugh.
