No, really?
According to our local NPR outlet, WNYC, that is indeed the case.
The first half hour of John Schaefer’s show Soundcheck yesterday was all about the rising popularity of Bollywood in this barrio. The episode, called Hooray for Bollywood, can be heard here.
Prime guest was none other than local ladka, the BoxOfficeGuru himself, Gitesh Pandya.
Toward the end of the segment, he and John Schaefer were joined by Anjali Jindal from the ringtones & wallpaper vendor Saavn Mobile. (Yes, I couldn’t resist trying out the company’s wares. The next time a phone near you starts singing “Khaike Paan Banaraswalla”, it just might be mine….)
Now, if they’d only get Pachai Nirame too. Or even the Hindi version….
Your picture does indeed indicate quite a suave ensemble. I approve.
Rekha, thanks for visiting. I don’t talk about too many Tamil films as we don’t get quite so many by me, and unfortunately, of some of the ones we do get, their not always the best releases. And on the ringtone, I keep promising myself that on my trip to India, I’m gonna’ try and get it.
Lalluram, I hope to see it tomorrow. I’m interested to see your breakdown of peoples’ screen times.
Beth, I was so tempted to mention the game to him, but didn’t quite manage. And no, the fashion question never came up. I must add though, that I thought he looked great. Really naff brown cords, with a lot of deisgn on the back pockets, with cognac Western style boots, and a beige turtleneck.
Krishna, yes, I know! That’s where I first heard it! A few trips back I was hearing it in Madras, and then later in Bombay, and it wasn’t polyphonic, it was an actual clip of the song. I agree, the polyphonic ones can be annoying.
They actually DO have that (ringtone) back here in the subcontinent.
Trust me, you don’t want to lose respect for the song on a trashy ringtone.
Think you could KJo to play the drinking game with you?
Oooh! Or get him to post on Fugly about what makes good Bollywood costuming?
Hi
Are you going to review Eklavya soon ? I would love to see your comments on the film. Saw it yesterday in Toronto (we were only 3 people in the theatre). It has no entertainment value (I am the mass crowd filmi type). It may pick up awards for art direction, costumes and cinematography and thats about it – it will be a commercial disaster. No comedy, No fights, etc..
Roles: Amitabh – Saif (dominating the film along with Vidya).
Sanjay Dutt; (total screen time 7 minutes – 3 scenes)
Jackie Shroff (5 minutes – 3 scenes)
Jimmy Sheirgill ( less than 1 minute total time on screen even Parikshat Sahni has more scenes)
Bohman Irani (5 scenes – 10 minutes)
Sharmila Tagore (2 scenes – less than 2 minutes)
Now look at the poster (Sholay type) and you will be expecting the world from this film……complete let down
Hello there,
Stumbled upon your blog and must say it’s one of the more efficient, easy to navigate and last but not least well-written American Blogs about Hindi films.Only wish you did Tamil films as well.Coincidence….I do have the Hindi version of ‘Pachai Niramae’ “Saathiya” as my ring-tone 🙂
Wow Maria, you seem to have a lot of bollywood coming your way.
The show I am referring to was in Hindi on NDTV India( NDTV’s Hindi News Channel) and it had a different host.
Prannoy Roy’s AB interview was on NDTV 24×7(NDTV’s English News Channel). I did see its promo on NDTV24x7 but haven’t seen the show so can’t say how similar or different they were in their content.
Beth, ahem, ok…… The only thing is, I hope they’ll expand their offerings and have some older filmi songs too.
Nic, thanks for the tip. Do you mean the show with Prannoy Roy? If so, we’re due to get that today. Aside from AB singing, I was surprised to see in the clip that they got him up at the end to dance with the audience to “Sona Sona” from Major Saab!
And then there’s Shilpa Shetty on Walk the Talk too….what a filmi weekend.
And Karan Johar’s here with us in NYC for a fortnight.
Hey Maria, try catching AB’s interview on NDTV India (Hindi) if you get it at your place. It was telecast in India yesterday. The programme is called “India Kare sawaal”. I could catch just the last 10 minutes of the show.
It had AB singing his song from Silsila and singing it really well. It was clear that he really enjoys singing it. One could almost
see his eyes light up while singing the song. The show is scheduled for a repeat telecast on sunday.
I too will be purchasing. Every time my phone rings, Akshaye shakes it in his pleather pants.
