About this blog

During summer holidays, on the days when it was too rainy to go out, and before I discovered boys, I used to enjoy seeing how many books I could read by the time I returned to school in September.

In a similar vein, back in 2006, after almost 10 years of avid consumption of the latest Bombay releases, I decided to go on ek filmi safar that summer and see how many Hindi movies – the older ones, the newest ones, and repeats of some favorites – I could watch and review over the space of those 90 or so days of summer.

Comments, ideas, reminiscences about favorites, were then – and still are – all welcome and encouraged.

In the years since first starting this blog, I’ve also been doing some articles about various aspects of the Indian film bijness and also about authors and musicians.  You can find some of those clips here

Also, I’ve expanded the reach of this blog to include reference to Ireland’s many cultural contributions to the world, be it film or writing or music.  My roots are there, and like most 2nd gen kids, I have a deep affection and curiosity for the ancestral homeland.  And I’m always on the lookout to see if and where India and Ireland cross paths.

Years ago I also started a blog about non-filmi matters (are there any??) here

And lately I’ve also been kindly invited by my chums Amrita and Beth to occasionally join them on a wonderful venture they’ve got going called Masala Zindabad.  They have podcasts, transcripts of chats about various films, and much, much more.

You can reach me here [email protected] and you can follow me on Twitter @filmiholic

  1. Hi Maria,

Not sure you have been following the furor over Joel Stein’s column in Time magazine? I was forwarded your excellent story on Navroz Mody during the discussion on this “supposedly satire” piece in Time. Your story made me all teary eyed. All what you mentioned is still current with racist piece by Joel Stein. Would you like to cover it?

    Thanks,

    1. Thanks, Raj. I’ve read the piece and the responses. I think it’s already gotten a lot of coverage, don’t think there’s much for me to add, but thanks for sharing the links to Kal Penn and Sepia Mutiny.

  2. Hi Maria,

Came across your blog by accident. I would like to suggest movies Ankuar or Mandi or Zubeda or Bhoomika (movies by Shyam Benegal).

    Regards,

    Raj

    1. Hi Raj,

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ve actually seen Zubeidaa a few years ago and funny enough, was just mentioning it to a friend earlier today.

Thanks for stopping by; hope you’ll visit again,
      Maria
