When I spotted actress, model and producer Poorna Jagannathan (who played the kick-ass and worldly journo in Delhi Belly) at the opening night of the Indo-American Arts Council‘s NYIFF on May 1st, 2013, I asked her what else she had coming up. In addition to her role in Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani, she told me “I have a play that I’m producing in New Delhi , from the violence and silence in India, that is borne out of the rape that happened in Delhi. It’s a play with seven actors and it’s a testimonial play. A woman called Yael Farber is creating it.”
That play is Nirbhaya and it opens today at Culture Project at the Lynn Redgrave Theater.
It deals with the vicious attack on December 16, 2012 of Jyoti Singh, the young woman subsequently referred to by the media in India and and others as “Nirbhaya” meaning “fearless.” The play is written and directed by Yael Farber, and Poorna Jagannathan is one of the cast of seven.
Nirbhaya has already won awards at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and toured India. This is the play’s North American premiere and it will run until May 17. You can get tickets here.
